These contain violet micro-pigments that neutralize unwanted yellowness, resulting in a more brilliant blonde. Brassiness on brunette hair, meanwhile, typically reads more orange than yellow. As such, toners for brown hair are usually blue in color, since blue lies across from orange on the color wheel. Hairstylists use the color wheel to determine what tone is necessary for your toner service. They'll choose a toner that is on the opposite side of the color wheel from the tone you’re trying to reduce. “Hair toner is any semi- or demi-permanent hair color that helps enhance the tone of your hair,” says hairstylist Meri Kate O’Connor, colorist at Cooper West Hollywood.
